FAQs

How do I book a session with you?

Please navigate to my website’s “contact” tab, fill in your contact information, and write me a short note letting me know a little bit about the type of support you’re seeking. I generally respond to inquiries within two business days. From there, we can schedule an intake phone call, free of charge.

How should I prepare for a counselling session?

Please bring any questions or reservations about beginning counselling to our initial phone consultation. This is an opportunity for you to interview me and get a sense of whether working together might be a good fit for you. It’s also ideal if you can find a quiet, private space for our Zoom sessions and use a computer, rather than a phone, so that you can see me clearly.

Does online counselling really work?

The choice to work with a counsellor in person or online is a personal one. However, in my experience Zoom sessions work well and make it possible for clients to find a counsellor who is a good fit, independent of geographic location.

How long can I expect to be in counselling? How frequently should we meet?

The frequency and duration of counselling varies from person to person. For some people, periodic sessions are supportive and sufficient. Others may be interested in more intensive and/or longer-term therapeutic support. In general, if a client is interested in trauma therapy, for example, I recommend weekly sessions initially.

Will my counselling sessions be confidential?

Sessions are confidential, except in specific situations.

I am required by my regulatory body’s code of ethics to maintain client confidentiality except where there is written consent or danger to self or others. I also have a duty to report incidences of the sexual or physical abuse of a child to authorities.

Do you work with children?

No, I work exclusively with adults (18+).

Do you work with couples?

I do not offer couples counselling. However, if I am working with an individual who would benefit from this, I can offer referrals.

I can’t afford your rate. Do you offer a sliding scale?

I offer sliding-scale rates to a limited number of clients. Please inquire about a sliding scale rate if you are in financial need.

Can I receive insurance coverage for doing therapeutic counselling with you?

Clients with supplemental insurance may be able to submit counselling receipts for reimbursement. Check with your provider to inquire whether they offer coverage for sessions with ACCT Registered Therapeutic Counsellors (RTCs).

May I communicate with you between scheduled sessions?

In general, I am not available to correspond between sessions, apart from scheduling/logistical matters. If you are experiencing a crisis, we will work together to come up with a plan, which may involve identifying new resources or referring you to other practitioners who can offer additional support.

What if I need to cancel a session?

I charge the full rate for any sessions that are cancelled within less than 24 hours notice, except in the case of emergencies.
